Meals on Wheels: More Than Just a Meal
Staying at home matters. It’s where routines feel familiar and memories live. But for some older adults, health challenges, limited mobility, or the absence of nearby family can make everyday tasks — like shopping or cooking — difficult. That’s where Meals on Wheels helps.
Each weekday, caring volunteers deliver fresh, ready-to-eat meals to older neighbors across St. Joseph and Elkhart counties. The delivery isn’t just about food — it’s also a friendly moment of connection and peace of mind, knowing someone cares enough to check in. Meals on Wheels helps people stay nourished, independent, and safe right where they most want to be: at home.
Who Can Receive Meals
Meals on Wheels is for adults who:
- Are 60 or older (younger adults with disabilities may also qualify).
- Are homebound, meaning they can’t easily leave home to shop or prepare meals.
- Live with health conditions or disabilities that make meal preparation difficult.
- Don’t have family or a caregiver nearby to help with cooking or groceries.
- Live within the delivery area in St. Joseph or Elkhart County.
- Complete a short phone assessment with a REAL Services case manager.
- Have a spouse who may also qualify if living in the same home.
Meals on Wheels is funded in part by the Older Americans Act, local foundations, and community donations. Meals are provided at no cost to participants, and no one is ever denied service because of an inability to donate. Those who are able are encouraged to contribute toward the cost of their meals, and every gift helps sustain the program for others in need.
Because funding is limited, there may be times when a waitlist is in place.
