REAL Services provides weatherization measures for homes at no cost to income-eligible households in our community to further reduce their expenses.

Weatherization helps households lower energy costs and improve home comfort by making homes more energy efficient. Through services like insulation, air sealing, and heating system improvements, Weatherization reduces utility bills, improves health and safety, and helps families—especially those with limited incomes—stay safe and stable in their homes year-round. Weatherization procedures are offered in Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St. Joseph Counties, and include:

  • Furnace inspection for health and safety
  • Water heater inspection for health and safety
  • Cellulose insulation in attics and side walls
  • Air sealing measures
  • Client energy education

When completing your Weatherization application, it is important to check the box indicating you are interested in Weatherization services. Once applications are received, households are placed on a priority-based waitlist, not a first-come, first-served list. Priority is determined using federal guidelines that consider household composition—such as seniors, individuals with disabilities, or children—and energy burden, meaning how much of a household’s income goes toward utility costs. This process ensures that homes with the greatest need and highest energy burden are served first, helping the most vulnerable households reduce energy costs and remain safely housed.
