KJ’s Take: The Women Who Made a Way

When I think about the women who shaped my life, I see three very different paths. Three women whose lives looked nothing alike—and yet each of them sacrificed something to make a way for someone else.

The first was my Mom, Charlotte. Her life carried deep wounds from her own childhood, yet she found a way to move forward with resilience. One of the most powerful lessons she ever showed me was forgiveness. Later in life, when my grandfather—the man who had caused harm in her childhood—had nowhere else to go, she was the only sibling who would welcome him into her home as he aged.

Forgiveness like that doesn’t come easily. It takes a kind of strength most people never see.

But my story begins with another woman too.

My birth mother, Angie, made a decision that few people ever fully understand. She chose to allow someone else to raise her child because she believed it was the best path forward. I don’t know every circumstance that shaped that decision, but I know this: letting go takes a strength all its own.

Later in my life, I met a third woman who helped shape the road ahead of me. MaryAnn Pierce was a lawyer, a businesswoman, and one of the strongest women I’ve ever known. She believed fiercely in education, independence, and refusing to let other people define your limits.

She once told me that if I kept learning and never accepted the word no, I could accomplish anything. She taught me to be prepared, to never put all my cards on the table, and to walk into a room with confidence. And she believed you should do it with a smile and a well-cut suit.

In fact, she bought me my first professional suit so I could walk into a room looking like I belonged there—even before I fully believed it myself.

At first glance, these women lived very different lives. One overcame trauma and chose forgiveness. One made an unimaginable decision out of love. And one pushed open doors in a professional world that didn’t always welcome women, especially strong, confident women.

But the older I get, the more I see what they share. Each of them sacrificed something so someone else could move forward.

During Women’s History Month, we often celebrate the pioneers—the women who changed the world in visible ways. But just as often, the women who shape our lives do it quietly—through resilience, sacrifice, and belief in someone else.

Sometimes the most powerful legacy a woman leaves behind isn’t recognition.

It’s the life she helped someone else build.
